Having already opened Mama’s Royal Café and the Glen Ellen Inn, Rice took over the original Breakaway Café from Jenny Bushnell in 1994, then located where the Creekside Café is now, and moved the Breakaway to its current location – the site of a former Lyon’s restaurant in the Maxwell Village Shopping Center. With a 40-year history in the restaurant business, Rice says he looks forward to a little freedom. Mills is a Los Angeles movie industry veteran who brings special skills in practical management, says Hahn. According to Hahn, Cameron started at the Sunflower as a 15-year-old dishwasher, has been manager at the Sunflower for several years, and will soon graduate from Sonoma State University with a degree in business. Hahn said longtime Sunflower employees Aaron Mills and Melissa Cameron will become partners in the Breakaway Café, Sunflower Caffé and Chanamé wines. A couple years after on a week long trip called Cycle Oregon (think 2000 people in lycra, a traveling tent village, riding bikes all day with great food, coffee, beer and wine and an incredible sense of community and accomplishment), the idea of Breakaway was born. A few years later, after many trips together and a few years apart, we got married. We met while working at a coffee shop in the late 90’s and bonded over an affinity for single origin coffees. Tuesday is Kids Eat Free (one with every purchase of a regular entree and dine-in only) Brandon is hard at work refining some of our favorites and adding specials as we get our heads around the changing seasons.
